Okay… I am shot through with the potential of being a vital, self loving woman. I have just read a book that I want to give every girl I know, I want to shout it from the rooftops. Eve Ensler’s “I Am an Emotional Creature”. It is released imminently, but Eve gave me an advanced copy to read. I was privileged enough to meet Eve 13 years ago when I participated in a charity benefit for her BRILLIANT charity VDay, and performed one of the ‘Vagina Monologues’, which Eve wrote and performed throughout the world. It was an extraordinary night – Cate Blanchett, Melanie, Griffith, Natascha McElhone, Joely Richardson. We all took to the stage to raise money and awareness for violence against women worldwide. In her new book, (which is based on conversations she has had with hundreds of girls throughout the world), she manages to explode the conspiracy that our power, our sexuality, our beauty are all tools to trick and hurt us, and that we need men to sort us out. I cried reading “me” on so many of the pages. Why is it so daring to love ourselves? Therein lies the genius trick of patriarchy – the myth of Eve – ‘shame the woman’, destroy her by enticing her to destroy herself. It’s a wonderful book, I urge you to read it.
