Are you telling yourself the most up-to-date version of your story?

Recently I was included in a published thesis anthology called Caribbean Women Writers along with authors Jean Rhys, Dionne Brand, Karrine Steffans, Marie-Elena John, Jamaica Kincaid and Maryse Condé. I was surprised to see the younger contemporary writers – that would be me along with bestseller Karrine Steffans – in such esteemed company as my mentors whom I studied in college; Jean Rhys, Jamaica Kincaid and Maryse Condé.

The lesson for me is that we should never underestimate ourselves, the value we add to our culture, and the impact that we may be making at any level.

I have since switched my sentiment from surprised to grateful. Thank you!

Independence Day is one of those holidays that often feels awkward to people of color. Even if you love your life and country you can’t overlook all of the injustice and basic fact that you weren’t included in the Declaration of Independence.

Here’s What I Celebrate on Independence Day: Self Determination, Free Will, Personal Freedom, Independence from Direct Tyranny, Love of my Family, the Luxury of Time to Reflect, the Future, the POWER of being the Daughter of Brilliant Immigrants and being a first generation American.
