August is a time when many of us are trying to maximize the last days of summer. Food plays an important part of our summertime activities – family reunions, barbecues, maybe even a romantic rendezvous over sorbet and fresh berries. If you were at my Grandmother’s, you would find her serving up a large helping of hot homemade peach cobbler with an unapologetic scoop of ice cream. I can smell those fresh peaches now oozing out their juices and taste her homemade crust which is still my favorite part…I got in trouble taking the crust off of the pie…I still do this when I can get away with it. Think of your favorite summer time foods and the warm gatherings of family and friends to share in the feast. Umm Umm Good – the food and the fellowship. Now, I want you to bite into what feeds your mind, body spirit and soul with that same vigor
and excitement. Are you as invested and committed to getting your emotional and spiritual nourishment as you are to physically making sure that you don’t miss a good meal? In a few weeks, I will be in DC for a bi-annual fish fry that my friends graciously host. I love this event; hands down it’s worth the travel. I always look forward to going and chowing down on their
slammin’ fried fish. But it is not the fabulous fried fish and all the other delicious food that
keeps me coming back year after year and decade after decade. It is the love in their home, the open-hearted friendship of this couple, the gathering of a village from near and far, a tribe of old faces, and for me many new ones. That is the food I am hungering for…the “soul” food. Look, I’m all about great food but summer time is more than barbecues, fish fries and “gotta get you some more” cobbler gatherings. Summer is an opportunity to chill-out in warm weather and experience the breeze of authentic connection to feed and fill our stomachs and souls with what truly satisfies.

Some of my fondest memories of spending time with family are the many summer barbecues, especially the annual “End of Summer Family Picnic” at Aunt Patsy’s house on her sprawling and lush property in southern Maryland. It was a pot luck affair and my grandfather Willie Ballard always made his famous homemade lemonade and I remember his process. First you squeeze the lemons in a container
Slice and add the lemons to container
Pour on lots of sugar and ice
Then put in a cooler overnight
The next day transfer the contents to a big barrel.
Add lots of water
Add several packages of crystal light
Add more sugar and ice to perfection
*Not exactly low calorie, but very delicious!

Breathe…it seems so simple, but most of us are having difficulty breathing. That is part of why yoga is so helpful for many people, because much of its focus and foundation is on breathing…a deep inhale and a deep exhale, a true focused deep breath like you do at the doctor’s office for your physical examination followed by a true exhale. The stress of day-to-day living has most people breathing but without any awareness that they are doing it. Most of us are taking shallow breaths that don’t honor our organs and tissues that love for us to inhale and exhale in a way that they can benefit from the oxygen they crave as it comes in and out of the body. Whether or not you have the time, money, or energy to take the vacation of your dreams this summer, what you can do is to breathe, and breathe again. Call your family and friends and remind them, as they are going through their day-to-day routine, to remember that the body is requesting and requiring that we breathe mindfully, taking the time as if we are in the doctor’s office being examined to massage with kindness our lungs, brain and heart, our liver, kidneys, and pancreas, thyroid and gallbladder, our eyes, ears, our limbs and our tissues in order to breathe life deeply in and out of these vital places needed to carry us to the end. One way to begin caring for your body is to, in this moment, relax, make the time to breathe deeply in and out like you care about the body that you are in…that is the beginning of your vacation whether you leave home or not…breathe and breathe deeply. Your body is saying, “Please breathe deeply for me, for you, for us – Breathe.”

Come to London for the summer! It’s my home, but it’s also a terrifically exciting holiday destination, and can be catered to family, honeymooners, 50th Wedding anniversary, you name it… The list of things to do is endless but here are some of my favourites…For theatre The Donmar Warehouse, The Almeida, The National are home to superb plays – and they’re not even in the West End where there are many more. For art lovers The National Portrait Gallery, The National Gallery, The Tate (Modern and Britain) – or the intimate collection at The Courthauld. For the best in independent cinema the gorgeous Curzon Mayfair is a must, followed by a quick bite at any number of eateries in neighbouring Shepherds Market (or Nobu ‘round the corner). Also the fabulous Electric Cinema in Notting Hill where you can watch movies in huge armchairs while waiters serve you food or a drink from the bar. For shopping and re-fuelling snacks – there’s afternoon tea at Claridges Hotel, or a groovy bite at the top of the Dover Street Market – home to the hippest clothes and shoes available. There’s The Wolsey on Regent Street for lunch and people spotting. Nearby Bond Street have the best accessories that money can buy – jeweller ‘Solange Azagury Partridge’ and shoemaker ‘Georgina Goodman’ make my heart flutter. For a more low-key shopping experience there’s Ledbury Road and Westbourne Park Road in Notting Hill; Paul Smith is a mini emporium of classy goods from socks to paperweights, also Agent Provocateur down the road has fantastic underwear. My other favourite underwear brand ‘Bodas’ is next door is ‘Aime’ for the best selection of groovy Mama clothes (and ‘Petit Aime’ for their children- also ‘I Love Gorgeous’ and ‘Caramel’), ‘Matches’ for the best in current designer labels, and deli Ottolengi for exquisite food to take away. On a Friday morning Portobello Market is round the corner for vintage clothes and bric-a-brac – nip in to Elgin Grocer on Elgin Avenue (just off Portobello Road) for fresh pizza, lemonade, divine coffee and their Anzac cookies For family fun take your kids for a pony ride at Stag Lodge Stables in Richmond Park while deer munch on grass close by… and eat at The Petersham Nurseries. The River Thames has beauty and spectacle along every inch of its journey through the city– lunch or dinner at The River Café in Hammersmith… or a walk along the embankment to Chelsea Bridge… There’s the Science Museum in South Kensington, which could be followed by a picnic in Hyde Park near the Peter Pan statue. I could ramble on for hours! There are always events, festivals and fairgrounds popping up throughout the summertime for kids – Time Out is a widely available weekly magazine, which is indispensable, also The Guardian newspaper (the Observer on Sundays) has hot tips for what’s going on. Come to London, I challenge you not to have a fantastic time xxx

Ever since I was a little my dad always told me that “life is about choices, so be very mindful of what your choose.” And later my manager Vincent Cirrincione told me that “life is choice driven” he was referring to my career, but I was reminded that I have choices and we all have choices. Use your heart, your mind, and your soul to make the best choices for you. Both of these men were so right on. My dear friend, music mogul, Andre Harrell advised me “You don’t have to work so hard… just be yourself, be you. The right people and circumstances will find you. Everything will come to you if you walk knowing that.”

I started reading the work of Pema Chodron 10 years ago. From the first time I read about the philosophy of Buddhism I knew that that was where my soul could find a home. I have never met Pema, but her writing is formative in my journey towards loving kindness and a spiritual path. I have read and re-read her books, and depending on what stage I’m at they seem to flex and change to guide and comfort me in exactly the way I need it. The most positive (and challenging) lesson from Pema is to ‘stay with the pain’. I have learned possibly the most important attitude to life through this – pain is a great teacher – and if I accept it instead of running away from it, I will grow in strength and compassion. It has been key in the most difficult times in my life – even the times when the pain is too much. The word ‘maitri’ is the relationship we have towards ourselves, the loving kindness we can show ourselves when we are hurting. Instead of lashing out, festering a grudge, self harming, shutting down – there is another way, and that is maitri – to soothe our hurt with deep love for ourselves, until we are ready to accept the circumstances that have brought us the pain, make rational decisions to deal with it, and move on in a spirit of forgiveness. This doesn’t happen overnight, but Pema Chodron’s work is how you can get there.

Sticks and Stones
What a big lie, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Yes, sticks and stones can cause us physical harm if thrown at us, but without a doubt words can slay a person’s spirit and soul, robbing them of their sense of dignity and joy like nothing else. In the Old Testament it says that “The power of life and death is in the tongue.” Decide today that your tongue is going to be used to speak life and not death, not only into the lives of people close to you as well as strangers, but that you are going to begin this gentle revolution of using your words mindfully, honestly and tenderly beginning with yourself. Being kind to yourself is wisdom in action, it is the beginning of all genuine transformation…all other areas of growth can follow if your mouth is no longer used as a weapon of mass destruction against you or anyone else.

This Mothers Day I sent my Mum flowers, and when she received them she texted “…they made my day”. Your own Motherhood is beyond anything I could have been capable of. You tower over by miles. Celebrations”. I had tears in my eyes; to be anointed like that by own Mum. I’ve thought about it ever since, about how we do THE BEST THAT WE CAN so that our children do the best that they can, and so it goes on. I thought about the cycle that goes forward – that must never go backwards. We take from our Mothers so we can give to our children – the cycle of unconditional love. Oftentimes life creates obstacles that make it hard to give as fully as we want or can… When I became a Mother I was able to appreciate my own Mum in a much more profound way, which is why her text was so moving to me. We are friends now, equals, sharing the experience of being Mothers. I am humbled by how she raised us, how she provided so much with relatively little when compared to the support I have. All my successes are an extension of her sacrifice and hard work – which is the extension of her Mothers… and on and on. One day I will write the same message to my daughters, that they ‘tower over by miles’. A beautiful thing.

What gift are you giving or hoping for this year?” What I seldom hear publicly or on the radio, or see in a TV ad, is anything to honor all of the women and men who struggle with this day…maybe struggling because they longed to be a mother but was never able to conceive, birth a child or adopt; or because the relationship with their mother or wife/husband or child looks like a perfectly wrapped package outside, when in fact the relationship between mother and daughter or mother and son or husband and wife is imperfect and fractured with the truth hiding inside a beautiful box.

Wisdom is asking us to ponder, chew on and swallow in little pieces the truth about some things this Mother’s Day. Honoring your mother or wife doesn’t mean lying to yourself about how you feel about your relationship with her, or about how you feel if your heart is broken because this is your first or fiftieth year of being a mother without one of your children being alive. This can be a time to give ourselves permission to reengage with what is true about being a mother…that it is a gift and honor, but can be harder than steel to pull off and that even when we do, we may still find ourselves left with unfinished pieces of a dream or puzzle. For those who want this day to pass like a swift bolt of lightning because it is a time when digging deep into the soil of your soul still won’t grow a smile, know that is okay too. Mother’s Day is about being who and what you are with understanding and compassion for yourself and those around you. For me, this Mother’s Day is full of a gigantic bushel of gratitude and a pit of sorrow. My mother of 88 years is healthy and still reaching for her dreams, and my daughter, (a 15 year old rescue Portuguese Water Dog, who remains the love of my life and gave me years of joy and eternal bliss, while being my private tutor regarding life) died only days ago making her peaceful transition, searing a hole in my heart and soul that has left me speechless and almost without breath. So, I weep and give thanks this Mother’s Day as I struggle to redefine its meaning to me and my own identity.

Whether we are being taken to a Mother’s Day brunch, hosting a lick-your-fingers-good barbeque, hiding under the covers waiting for a new sunrise to free us from sorrow, or mixing and matching joy with sorrow, tears with laughter, hope with despair, let us all try to wisely eat from the rich plate that renowned author and poet Alice Walker prepared for us this Mother’s Day, and be in pursuit of tending our own gardens.

When I first moved to California to pursue my career, my cousin Demetrice and her son Bobby let my son and I stay with them. I had only $700 and she paid the rest to help me get a car. I don’t know what we would have done without them. I struggled to make ends meet and if I ran short with the rent or getting my car license renewed, my manager, Vince, always helped me out. He believed in me.

I was going to do a 60-city tour for my last album, but it got canceled, I was so mad that it would look like I let down my fans. However that same year the fairs across the country said I could perform with them, and all my dancers stayed with me so that I could touch the audience where ever I could! My crew knew how much my fans mean to me, and we all rallied together and got it done! That meant a lot to me, because most people would have left me to fend on my own! I love them!

The old adage “April showers bring May flowers” connects with the month of April birthing this Spring season, but what will this Spring birth in you? This season is making me think of the millions of Americans who do not have food to eat, or who are offered and forced to eat inferior quality food, and those who try to make a morsel of food into a meal to feed a family. Worse yet are the vast numbers whose stomachs beat and pulsate like the sound of drums from a drill team because of hunger. I am burdened about the waste many of us help to create, and I feel challenged to do something to help those who are hungry. We must also remember that there is more than one kind of hunger that ails this great country of America…notably, spiritual, emotional and relational hunger. I don’t know about you, but I have cravings that even the best meal can’t satisfy, and hunger pains that seem to need a direct touch from the hands of The Creator. Are you hungry? If so, what will satisfy your deep rumbling appetite? Maybe you are blessed to have enough food and love to share with someone who is in need…perhaps Spring will birth a new sense of generosity.
Earth Day is this month. Remember, one of the greatest gifts you can leave behind for your children, grandchildren and others whom you love is an Earth that you have actively and personally nurtured and cared for…the magic that will save the planet rests in your heart and hands, and in mine.
