Holidays…what does this mean, what does it conjure up for you? For some of us, these are holy days or days of family and tradition. For others, it is a time to collectively gather and reaffirm shared values and beliefs, while for some it offers a few days off from work and responsibility. For many, it is a time to once again create overwhelming debt that might take until this time next year to dig out of. There are also the brave few who will admit to this being a time of sorrow, grief and unfulfilled longing. There are those who see these as days of great expectancy, of new life and birth, found in the ancient world of a manger in Bethlehem. For some it is the Festival of Lights, of hope and eight days of gifts and gatherings with the familiar Dreidel for all to enjoy. And still others find this season to be a sacred call to the foundation of Seven Principles that cultivate and accentuate unity, cooperation and a togetherness that empowers the village to grow, build and heal. Whatever this season means to you, allow the end of this year to be the fertile ground to wave goodbye to the old, maybe even good riddance if the pain of this year was simply too much to bear. Wisdom invites us to prepare ourselves to usher in the new birth of the New Year. That is our divine birthright. You can begin again!

When was your last mammogram? Are you overdue? Are you afraid to go and get one? Most women hate getting mammograms. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the pinch and squeeze, but each time I humbly go for my mammogram, I see it as my way of doing my part in keeping myself healthy. Depending on your age, your risk level based on family history, or some other factor that might increase your chances of breast cancer, a mammogram is one step that may help save your life or the life of someone you love. My cousin had breast cancer, several very close friends had breast cancer, and my friend’s daughter-in-law (only in her twenties) had breast cancer. I don’t want to scare you, and I don’t want to live being afraid. I just want us to do our part in practicing good self-care. In romantic, intimate and sexual moments we allow others to feel our breasts, touch our breasts, and even kiss our breasts…and that’s all good, but let’s make sure that we are giving our own breasts the same attention that we want others to offer them. You set the standard and let the squeezing and touching begin with your own hands of healing, wisdom and skill…then feel free to share with worthy others the gift of your nurturing bosom.

August is a time when many of us are trying to maximize the last days of summer. Food plays an important part of our summertime activities – family reunions, barbecues, maybe even a romantic rendezvous over sorbet and fresh berries. If you were at my Grandmother’s, you would find her serving up a large helping of hot homemade peach cobbler with an unapologetic scoop of ice cream. I can smell those fresh peaches now oozing out their juices and taste her homemade crust which is still my favorite part…I got in trouble taking the crust off of the pie…I still do this when I can get away with it. Think of your favorite summer time foods and the warm gatherings of family and friends to share in the feast. Umm Umm Good – the food and the fellowship. Now, I want you to bite into what feeds your mind, body spirit and soul with that same vigor
and excitement. Are you as invested and committed to getting your emotional and spiritual nourishment as you are to physically making sure that you don’t miss a good meal? In a few weeks, I will be in DC for a bi-annual fish fry that my friends graciously host. I love this event; hands down it’s worth the travel. I always look forward to going and chowing down on their
slammin’ fried fish. But it is not the fabulous fried fish and all the other delicious food that
keeps me coming back year after year and decade after decade. It is the love in their home, the open-hearted friendship of this couple, the gathering of a village from near and far, a tribe of old faces, and for me many new ones. That is the food I am hungering for…the “soul” food. Look, I’m all about great food but summer time is more than barbecues, fish fries and “gotta get you some more” cobbler gatherings. Summer is an opportunity to chill-out in warm weather and experience the breeze of authentic connection to feed and fill our stomachs and souls with what truly satisfies.

Breathe…it seems so simple, but most of us are having difficulty breathing. That is part of why yoga is so helpful for many people, because much of its focus and foundation is on breathing…a deep inhale and a deep exhale, a true focused deep breath like you do at the doctor’s office for your physical examination followed by a true exhale. The stress of day-to-day living has most people breathing but without any awareness that they are doing it. Most of us are taking shallow breaths that don’t honor our organs and tissues that love for us to inhale and exhale in a way that they can benefit from the oxygen they crave as it comes in and out of the body. Whether or not you have the time, money, or energy to take the vacation of your dreams this summer, what you can do is to breathe, and breathe again. Call your family and friends and remind them, as they are going through their day-to-day routine, to remember that the body is requesting and requiring that we breathe mindfully, taking the time as if we are in the doctor’s office being examined to massage with kindness our lungs, brain and heart, our liver, kidneys, and pancreas, thyroid and gallbladder, our eyes, ears, our limbs and our tissues in order to breathe life deeply in and out of these vital places needed to carry us to the end. One way to begin caring for your body is to, in this moment, relax, make the time to breathe deeply in and out like you care about the body that you are in…that is the beginning of your vacation whether you leave home or not…breathe and breathe deeply. Your body is saying, “Please breathe deeply for me, for you, for us – Breathe.”

Sticks and Stones
What a big lie, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Yes, sticks and stones can cause us physical harm if thrown at us, but without a doubt words can slay a person’s spirit and soul, robbing them of their sense of dignity and joy like nothing else. In the Old Testament it says that “The power of life and death is in the tongue.” Decide today that your tongue is going to be used to speak life and not death, not only into the lives of people close to you as well as strangers, but that you are going to begin this gentle revolution of using your words mindfully, honestly and tenderly beginning with yourself. Being kind to yourself is wisdom in action, it is the beginning of all genuine transformation…all other areas of growth can follow if your mouth is no longer used as a weapon of mass destruction against you or anyone else.

“In Search Of My Mother’s Garden, I Found My Own” -Alice Walker

Mother’s Day is a loaded holiday for many people. Television advertisements bombard us, asking: “What are you doing for your mother? Where are you being taken? What gift are you giving or hoping for this year?” What I seldom hear publicly or on the radio, or see in a TV ad, is anything to honor all of the women and men who struggle with this day…maybe struggling because they longed to be a mother but was never able to conceive, birth a child or adopt; or because the relationship with their mother or wife/husband or child looks like a perfectly wrapped package outside, when in fact the relationship between mother and daughter or mother and son or husband and wife is imperfect and fractured with the truth hiding inside a beautiful box.

Wisdom is asking us to ponder, chew on and swallow in little pieces the truth about some things this Mother’s Day. Honoring your mother or wife doesn’t mean lying to yourself about how you feel about your relationship with her, or about how you feel if your heart is broken because this is your first or fiftieth year of being a mother without one of your children being alive. This can be a time to give ourselves permission to reengage with what is true about being a mother…that it is a gift and honor, but can be harder than steel to pull off and that even when we do, we may still find ourselves left with unfinished pieces of a dream or puzzle. For those who want this day to pass like a swift bolt of lightning because it is a time when digging deep into the soil of your soul still won’t grow a smile, know that is okay too. Mother’s Day is about being who and what you are with understanding and compassion for yourself and those around you. For me, this Mother’s Day is full of a gigantic bushel of gratitude and a pit of sorrow. My mother of 88 years is healthy and still reaching for her dreams, and my daughter, (a 15 year old rescue Portuguese Water Dog, who remains the love of my life and gave me years of joy and eternal bliss, while being my private tutor regarding life) died only days ago making her peaceful transition, searing a hole in my heart and soul that has left me speechless and almost without breath. So, I weep and give thanks this Mother’s Day as I struggle to redefine its meaning to me and my own identity.

Whether we are being taken to a Mother’s Day brunch, hosting a lick-your-fingers-good barbeque, hiding under the covers waiting for a new sunrise to free us from sorrow, or mixing and matching joy with sorrow, tears with laughter, hope with despair, let us all try to wisely eat from the rich plate that renowned author and poet Alice Walker prepared for us this Mother’s Day, and be in pursuit of tending our own gardens.

The old adage “April showers bring May flowers” connects with the month of April birthing this Spring season, but what will this Spring birth in you? This season is making me think of the millions of Americans who do not have food to eat, or who are offered and forced to eat inferior quality food, and those who try to make a morsel of food into a meal to feed a family. Worse yet are the vast numbers whose stomachs beat and pulsate like the sound of drums from a drill team because of hunger. I am burdened about the waste many of us help to create, and I feel challenged to do something to help those who are hungry. We must also remember that there is more than one kind of hunger that ails this great country of America…notably, spiritual, emotional and relational hunger. I don’t know about you, but I have cravings that even the best meal can’t satisfy, and hunger pains that seem to need a direct touch from the hands of The Creator. Are you hungry? If so, what will satisfy your deep rumbling appetite? Maybe you are blessed to have enough food and love to share with someone who is in need…perhaps Spring will birth a new sense of generosity.
Earth Day is this month. Remember, one of the greatest gifts you can leave behind for your children, grandchildren and others whom you love is an Earth that you have actively and personally nurtured and cared for…the magic that will save the planet rests in your heart and hands, and in mine.

“A Woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water.” Eleanor Roosevelt (Quoted from Inspirational Vitamins, Dr. Robin L. Smith)

Where would I be and Who would I be without you….? Yes, you, Dr. Katherine Dunham, who was one of the first African Americans to earn her bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in anthropology from the University of Chicago. Shortly before Dr. Dunham died, I was blessed to meet her at the New York screening of Oprah’s “Legends” premiere. Not knowing her, but “knowing” her, I saw a regal, dignified woman sitting in what was her wheelchair, but to me it looked like the throne of a queen garbed in her royal colors. I knelt down at the foot of her wheel chair; she took my hand into her strong, soft and distinguished hand. I looked up at this queen of the world, I looked into her eyes as she lovingly penetrated me with her gaze…and then, I felt the transfer of her rugged and brilliant life deposit into me “food,” soul food that I would need to make my journey. Dr. Dunham died shortly after this encounter…it was the first and last time that I would see her and yet to this day, this moment captured in a photograph which hangs on my wall reminds me of who I am in seasons of delight as well as in times of spiritual drought and adversity. I speak her name and I feel her power and covering. Like Dr. Dunham, in my own family lineage, my maternal grandmother, the daughter of a freed slave who is 106 years old, my mother who is 88 years of age, my Aunt who is 90 years old and my Godmother, a young 68 years of age are women who have profoundly shaped me both by word and deed…they each survived the unsurvivable.

I would not be the woman and person that I am without my personal intimate village of women friends whose love keeps me swimming when I feel like I’m drowning and who are my memory of my own God given dignity when pain has made me drop it like it’s hot.

At one point, a few of my closest friends all had major challenges in their lives, dealing with issues that felt too huge and heavy to bear. They each doubted their choices and decisions, and seesawed between blaming and shaming themselves and others for the pot of misery and terror that was being served to them for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even snack time, seeming never to give them a break. They were exhausted from the battlefield of life, and yet each of their lives demanded that they continue to function and face the realities of that day. The wisest woman that I know spoke these words: “all you need is one cell….” The same way that cancer begins in one cell and can spread, so can wisdom, compassion, forgiveness, love and resilience toward oneself and others. You can begin today to transform your life and relationships, one cell at a time. Health and wellness can spread just the way sickness and disease can. Be encouraged that what you need you already have; you have one cell of wisdom…I would bet, you have two, actually many more. Spread the good news that change begins with one cell. We can all gain access to that one cell and nurture it until it multiplies. Be gentle with yourself.

Sometimes people say they feel badly for women in Africa who have to walk many miles to get fresh and clean water. I was told by women in Africa that they are at times puzzled by this concern for their long hiking trips that they deem necessary. As they walk erect, like perfected statues of strength and grace, they are communing with those on the same journey. They ask: “When would we talk, laugh, gather in solidarity if we did not need to walk to get water?” No woman is an island. We need each other to walk on the journey of life and keep us company throughout the many seasons. This camaraderie has been a life jacket, a life boat, and at times provided life itself in tough times in my own life. Look to see what sister might be next to you, willing to walk with you through your season of joy or sorrow or whom you might lend your hand, smile or shoulder on their journey. Wisdom will lead us to each other. Look for her, she’s waiting for you. She’s there waiting for you!
