A few months ago I was blessed to attend my 20th high school reunion. It was great to see so many faces from one of the hardest times in a young girls life. I went to an all girls Catholic school. I learned so much from the friendships I formed in High School. I have to say we still look as good as we did in High School. The only thing that changed was the years. I was surrounded by a great group of women. The laughter we shared inspired me to try and keep in touch. Facebook is a great resource for this. The laughter we shared on that night motivated me months later! In honor of Woman’s month these are just a few of the women who were in attendance that inspired the laughter of my youth.

We honored local women who are making a real difference through their humanitarian efforts. Women like actress/philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete, community organizer Sweet Alice Harris and noted sculptor Artis Lane. Women who inspire us all. But it was when civil rights icon Myrlie Evers Williams spoke,we knew were in the presence of true greatness. She inspired us with our history and our future and shared with us her courage and the courage of her family. I saw in her my grandmother and my mother and all the women who have gone before. We owe them our strength, gratitude, love and our hard work to make them proud as we honor Freedom’s Sisters.

Happy International Women’s Day, everyone! This year’s Academy Awards will go down in history as the “indie Oscars”, when low-budget films about extreme situations swept the ceremony with big wins for “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” and “The Hurt Locker,” as well as “Crazy Heart,” a film that, according to New York Times reporter Melena Ryzik, ” was almost relegated to the DVD dustbin of history.”

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Best Director award. Meanwhile, Sandra Bullock pulled off an unlikely twofer, winning the Best Actress Oscar for “The Blind Side” a day after she took home the Razzie for Worst Actress for her work in “All About Steve.”

Another historical win: Geoffrey Fletcher became the first African-American to win a writing award for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”

In her brief acceptance speech, Best Supporting Actress winner Mo’Nique thanked her husband, Sidney Hicks, for encouraging her to work on “Precious,” a film about an abusive, dysfunctional mother-daughter relationship that hardly seemed like the typical box-office hit-maker when it was released last year.

Her husband pushed her, she said, by stressing that “sometimes, you have to forgo doing what is popular in order to do what’s right. Baby, you were so right.”

I have a confession to make. My new book Living in the Heartland: Three Extraordinary Women’s Stories is not a story about three women. It’s actually a story about four women. I am the fourth woman.

While Nancy, Ife and Ellyn, the three heroines in my nonfiction story, belong to racial minorities my story is intimately tied to theirs. At the heart of all our stories is the importance of family and tradition. Family and traditions have helped the women overcome many challenges in their lives. I didn’t grow up with a strong sense of family or tradition. I was raised, for the most part, as an only child. My siblings were significantly older than me and left home when I was a toddler. Their was little other family, besides my parents and siblings. For these reasons, I never developed a strong connection to family that is until I had my own, but as my sons grew older, became more independent, that connection began to unravel. When my parents died I became more disconnected. Then my sons left home for college. All sense of family felt as if it had evaporated. I decided I needed to search for a definition of meaning of family, and that’s the story behind my book.

I have learned that while there are things I cannot change; for example, I could not choose the family I was into, I have the freedom to create my own family and to adopt my own traditions. I also realize that it is possible to find support and inspiration from women who may on the surface seem very different than me. This is what ultimately lies at the heart of my book and my blog.

There is no need for anyone to feel lost, to feel isolated. There is a world of people from whom we can find guidance, inspiration, even love, if we recognize that we are all one family.

My story is that of love. Love in the most raw, realest way that you can imagine. My mother met and married her husband at age 40. Prior to this everything she was, her heart, mind, soul, and body was subjected to everything and anything terrifying you can think of. However she rose above it and still put her all into this thing we call love. Marrying this man set her free, it allowed her to finally be her real self. She could now take off her mask and armor, because this man was here to save her. Unfortunately something this beautiful can only last so long. To an outsider hearing the news of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer would bring you literally to your knees. Not this couple, the love they had was strong enough to endure whatever was due to come their way. Some would use these last precious moments to grow stronger together, and live each moment like you were dying. This couple already lived everyday that way, not once did they take one another for granted. My mother died within a year of being diagnosed. Now this is where the meaning of true love comes into play. This man took on a single woman of three “mixed” girls. He grew up with something we never did stability, money, a college education. Our family on the other hand grew up on what some might call the other side of the track. Not once did he ever look down upon us, he embraced all of us so effortlessly. He was the only person that stood by my mother and us. Not even our biological dad could weather this storm. Words cannot explain the bravery, strength, and emotion that he showed when my mother passed. Somehow seeing him so brave but yet be able to sob relentless tears, I knew we were going to be okay. My mothers husband does not know what a blessing he was. Especially to come at a time when she was the lowest, and actually see us through that low point. This my friends is a real man, a hero, a role-model.

City living can take a lot out of us. We can get caught up with the fast pace and daily grind. It’s hard to go against the grain at times. When I get overwhelmed what gives me hope is to connecting with Mother Nature. It’s just what I need to give me hope to continue striving towards my goals! My favorite Mother Nature pick me up is the beach. I have wonderful memories of family trips to the beach. I try to celebrate as many of my birthdays at the beach as well. There’s something about the sound of the waves, the way the sky and water connect in the horizon, the feel of the sand in my toes it’s grounding and completely magical. I cannot always get away but this picture helps give me the hope I need until I can get to the beach.
